Herbs for immune health

These are certainly troubling times.  Things feel out of control and viruses especially can feel very scary because they don’t have a known cure or vaccine.  However, there are still things we can do to support and boost our immune system, so we are less prone to illness.  And if we do catch something, our system can more easily fight it off.   

This is why we love herbs and their supportive powers.  

However, we need to be clear – we are not saying any of these herbs can combat COVD-19, but they are all known immunity boosters, helping ward off colds and flus. 

These are a few of our favourites.  
Even better, they are herbs that are often found at home in the pantry or garden.   

Olive Leaf - has antiviral, antibacterial and antioxidant properties may help to both prevent and treat colds and flu.  It is thought the properties in olive leaf work on colds & flus in two ways – firstly they may attack the flu virus once symptoms are present, improving immune function and reducing symptoms.  They also work to stop the virus replicating and spreading, so you get better faster. 

Thyme -  helps fights respiratory infections, coughs, colds, and the flu, bronchitis, sore throats, and asthma.  It also boosts blood circulation to accelerate healing and speeds up recuperating after an illness.

Garlic – has a wide range of benefits including being effective against viruses, bacteria and parasites. Studies have shown that garlic increases the natural killer cells of the immune system, can reduce the severity of colds and flu, and reduces inflammatory markers in the immune system.

Elder – both the berries and flowers have anti-viral, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.   As well as supporting the body with fevers and flu, Elder may help reduce allergies and boost the immune system. 

Echinacea – helps enhance the body’s natural defences.  Good for kids too.

Ginger – helps soothe sore throats with its anti-inflammatory properties. It also boosts immunity to help fight viruses and infections.

 

 

Most of these herbs can be made into a simple tea that will help support your immune system. 

Combining any of these herbs with peppermint tea can help open up the nasal passages and improve breathing.
