Why we love Earth's Kitchen Sunscreen
You don’t need to be a dermatologist to know that protecting your skin from the sun is one of the best things we can do to prevent premature ageing and many forms of skin cancer. But before you go slathering sunscreen all over yourself and your loved ones, remember that your skin is the largest organ of your body. It protects us, but also absorbs what we put on it…and not all sunscreens are created equal.
We are incredibly fussy about what sunscreen we stock, and Earth's Kitchen is the only one that passes our rigorous screening process. We are very proud to be stocking a world first for sunscreen that's made right here in Northland!
So here's why we love it so much....
Who makes it?
We stock Earth Kitchen sunscreen which is formulated by medical herbalist, registered nurse and naturopath, Jules Bright.
It took nearly two decades to perfect the formulas to create a completely natural, non-GMO and cruelty free sunscreen. It’s Northland-made, dermatologist tested and FDA approved.
Is it suitable for babies? What about sensitive skin?
It comes in two types - Kawakawa & Tamanu SPF50+ certified natural sun protection for adults & children 6yrs+ and Moringa & Harakeke SPF50+ certified natural sun protection for babies – perfect for those littlies and those with sensitive skin.
Are they officially tested?
Earth's Kitchen is the world’s first BioGro certified natural sunscreen SPF50 and carries the Certified Natural label, authorised by Natrue.
Their products are globally certified SPF50 and Earth's Kitchen is officially the world's first and only sunscreen to attain 100% natural certification that has global certification for SPF63.8 AFTER 2 hours water immersion. Testing was done by Eurofins.
Not only is it certified, but it’s award winning sunscreen too. In 2020 they won gold at the Global Green Beauty Awards for Best Plant-based Product and Silver for Best Ethical Product for their Kawakawa & Tamanu Certified Natural Sun Protection. These are world-wide awards! This on the tail of winning 'Best NZ Sunscreen' at the Best of NZ Naturals Awards.
This means you can feel comfortable knowing you're purchasing a true, completely natural cosmetic product that meets global certification standards, not a greenwashed one!
What's in it?
BioGro certification means that 100% of Earth’s Kitchen sunscreen ingredients are certified natural and full of potent healing and protecting ingredients found in nature. So you can feel confident that the protection is far more than skin deep.
The baby sunblock has extra protective and nourishing ingredients for new, vulnerable skin like Moringa – a high nutrient superfood plant that helps nourish and build the skin’s ability to protect itself.
Harakeke is traditionally used for burns, cuts and skin rashes – it has high healing qualities and is a cooling antiseptic gel used to New Zealand’s harsh sun conditions.
German chamomile is a gentle yet potent anti-inflammatory with amazing calming and nutritive properties – it is a dark blue essential oil which gives the lotion a pale blueish colour that smoothes on invisibility.
The adult sunscreen also has beautifying, nourishing ingredients like Tamanu – an enriching, powerful “miracle oil” that is traditionally used for all kinds of skin issues like rashes, acne, eczema, dermatitis, wrinkles and skin blemishes.
Kawakawa otherwise known as the ‘King of Medicine” is antibacterial, antifungal, tonifying, calming, nutritive, smoothing and smells amazing.
There is less percentage of essential oils in the baby sunscreen – it still has a wonderful island aroma of sweet organic oranges and vanilla pod.
The adult one smells luscious and both men and women love it.
More importantly we can tell you what's NOT in it.....
The natural formula is free from nasty chemicals. Ingredients are cruelty free – never tested on animals, non-GMO, biodegradable, reef safe, made with organic and wildcrafted ingredients.
NO genetically modified or irradiated ingredients
NO sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS)
NO artificial fragrances
NO titanium dioxide
That's all great, but how well does it rub in?
It goes on white, but rubs in well and becomes transparent.
Is it safe for the ocean?
Absolutely. It's certified reef safe from Hawaii.
What about the packaging?
All packaging was recylable when it was packaged (type 5) and sourced from sustainable forests. They are working on finding compostable tubes to switch
Can I wear moisturising lotion under my sunscreen?
Yes, just make sure it’s fully absorbed before applying sunscreen otherwise it may dilute the effectiveness of your sun protection.
Can I wear make up over sunscreen?
Yes, you can. Earth’s Kitchen sunscreen is certified natural and contains no pore clogging ingredients like mineral oil, making it a great base for make up. Just be sure to remember to reapply sunscreen during extended periods of sun exposure.
How much is it?
$38 for 150ml which lasts ages (one tube lasted us over one summer - Jane)
Get in quick to get yours - it's literally flying out the door.
